- WORKSHOP #1 - Hand Fans: Fascinating Objects Representing Many World Cultures
The Illinois Geographic Alliance, LLC (IGA) at Illinois State University is pleased to offer a half-day (12:30 to 3:30 p.m.), virtual workshop on hand fans. This interactive workshop will focus on hand fans from around the globe to teach human geography as it relates to world cultures and their traditions. Through many visual representations and videos of cultural practices and ethnic traditions, participants will learn innovative ways to teach students a sense of place, global interconnections, while also enhancing their map skills. This workshop is targeted at teachers in grades 3-8; however, other educators are welcome to attend as the content will be adaptable to higher levels.
The goal of the workshop is to provide participants with a unique geographical focal point to teach students a sense of place and how cultural traditions vary from country to country and are influenced by their location. Fans will be used to demonstrate how cultural objects are utilized in each country that we will “visit,” including Spain, Nigeria, Indonesia, Peru, Korea, the Marshall Islands, Japan, and China.
Workshop leader Robin Goettel, retired Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Associate Director for Education, has been a Geography educator for 40 years and an avid hand fan collector for 30 years. She will provide a wide array of content resources, including photos, books, maps, magazine articles, links to online museum collections, and videos of fan dancing traditions.
The workshop is free and will be conducted virtually over Zoom from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024.
In-service and pre-service educators at all levels (PreK-16) are welcome. You do not need to be a member of the Illinois Geography Alliance, LLC (IGA) to participate in the workshop.
Participants will receive a $50 stipend, a certificate of completion, and PD hours (CPDUs) for successful completion of the workshop.
Please register online by Saturday, June 15, 2024. Space is limited. (Note: A registration confirmation will be emailed to you immediately after you successfully submit your online registration form.
