Session 1: Urban Fringe Planning Activity

Using various resources, including field observation and the internet, conference participants will work in teams to conduct hands-on research and share findings. Come to the conference prepared for some walking outdoors on school property. Cameras and binoculars will be helpful but not necessary.

Session 6: Teaching a Spatial Perspective of Geography Outside the Classroom

John Braglia (James B. Conant High School)

Three field studies that require active participation from the students are presented followed by a discussion of the importance of sensory learning when developing a spatial perspective, lessons associated with the field studies, and the importance of establishing inter-agency relationships within the community when developing a field study.

Session 7: Creating Student Understanding Through Infographics

Kelly Henkel (Plainfield East High School)

The Piktochart website (http://piktochart.com/) will be used to explain how students can use the infographic technology to display their data collected in the field or data provided for them in class. This approach makes data more digestible for students and allows them to display their understanding and interpretation of data.
